May: All the Average People, Where Are They Gonna Live?

Slipping in under the wire again this month. I wrote the lyrics to this song a while ago, but these days I'm going back to old lyrics that have yet to turn into songs for my inspiration.

This song is a sort of futuristic look at what might happen to Vancouver if housing prices keep rising, if wealthy people keep hiding their money in real estate, and if all the average people have to leave the city cause they can't afford to live there any more.

Then there's Air BnB which takes away rentals in communities, meaning it's harder and harder to find a place to rent. Once again, where do local people go when there's nowhere to live?

Seems homes are not for living in any more, and are just for making money.

This is happening in cities around the world, including Vancouver, London, Sydney, San Francisco, and Toronto.

For piano, in D minor.

All the Average People, Where Are They Gonna Live?

Once an ordinary city by the mountains and the sea
Just your average city people living safe and quietly
Everything is changing now, seems the future's almost here
Things are moving way to fast, will our city disappear?

Now there aren't so many neighbours, but lots of Air BnB
Many houses standing empty, they're investment property
Schools are mostly silent now, cause kids are a novelty
Living in the city you can't afford a family.

All the average city people have to leave the city behind
Greed and money wining once again, housing prices are sky high
Wealthy people hiding cash in overseas monster homes
No one ever lives there but long term value surely grows.

All the average people, where are they gonna live?
All the average people, where are we gonna live?

Empty cities all around us, from Vancouver to St. Ives
Millionaires with too much money changing ordinary lives
Tidal wave of gross excess flowing in from distant shores
They don't care about the place, only profit's bright allure.

All the average people, where are they gonna live?
All the average people, where are we gonna live?
